Washing the nipples with soap and water daily actually dries them out, making the nipples and tissue around the breast more likely to crack with nursing, which provides bacteria an easy entry into the body. Current recommendations are to avoid washing the nipples or breast area.

Current recommendations are to avoid washing the nipples or breast area after every breastfeeding. Washing one's body in the shower as normal is sufficient.
