September 26, 2003, Newsletter Issue #156: FDA Says Herbal Tea Linked to Seizures

Tip of the Week

Over a billion and a half dollars is spent by consumers each year on herbal remedies and the amount is rising 15 percent annually. Are they getting their money`s worth and how safe are they?

Because the Food and Drug Administration is responsible for food safety for most of our food and the safety and effectiveness of drugs, many people assume that dietary supplements and natural plant products marketed as having medicinal benefits are equally protected. Such is not the case. The health food proprietors and lobbyists have thus far prevented any effective legislation on the federal level to safeguard the health of the public.

Fortunately, most of the herbs currently available are safe. No one disputes the fact that some of our most effective medicines have been produced from plant materials. But being "natural" does not always mean "safe."
